The Black-backed Dwarf-Kingfisher is a small kingfisher found from India to Southeast Asia. Northern populations move south for winter.
Its mantle is blue-black, with rufous on the face and underparts. The mantle color helps distinguish it from the Rufous-backed Kingfisher.
It occurs in forests, mangroves, parks, and gardens, feeding on insects, small lizards, fish, and amphibians.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
