The Horned Parakeet is endemic to New Caledonia, where pairs and small groups move through forest canopy.
Its forehead is red, and the crest carries red feathers plus two long black feathers tipped with scarlet. Orange-yellow ear coverts contrast with the green body; the sexes look alike. Adults have a blue-gray bill with a black tip, orange irises, and black legs. The listed length is 32 cm.
Usually cautious and quiet, it lives in pairs or small flocks of up to about ten. It rests in the canopy or tree cavities and eats flowers, nuts, fruit, berries, and seeds.
It breeds from October to December in tree hollows, hollow branches, or cavities under rocks or fallen trees, laying 3–4 eggs. The young fledge after 5–6 weeks.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
