Although its English name refers to Florida Island, a reassessment identifies Ugi Island as the type locality. Only the 1881 holotype is known, and whether the species survives today has not been confirmed.
The original description reported light ashy-gray skin, long black guard hairs, small ears, and a tail slightly longer than the head and body. Only the holotype skull remains today.
A preliminary 2012 survey on Ugi Island did not find the species. The authors left open the possibility that it survives because some original forest remains; its present status is unresolved.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
