MDD currently lists the Gland-tailed Free-tailed Bat as Mops bemmeleni. Records are divided between western/central and eastern Africa; its two described forms may not be the same species.
This bat lacks a noseleaf and its tail tip extends beyond the flight membrane. The back is dark brown with light frosting; the underside is paler, the wings are pale grey, and each flank has a whitish stripe. Paired glands lie beside the tail base.
It has been recorded in lowland rainforest, semi-deciduous forest, forest-savanna mosaics and montane grassland. In Cameroon, individuals were netted over a fast-running stream at a forest edge beside a cleared area.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
