This South American tanager has striking black-and-white plumage and broad white tips on its long tail. It is common in Amazonia, especially along forest edges and in secondary growth.
Adults have a white body with black extending from the head onto the mantle and breast. The black wings and tail have large white tips, and the adult iris is yellow.
In Amazonian forest landscapes, it prefers forest edges and secondary vegetation.
