This myna is easy to recognize by its black head, pale belly, and yellow bill. In its native southern Sulawesi it flocks in open farmland and other lowland habitats, searching for food on the ground.
Adults have a black head, short silky crest feathers, white wing patches, pale eyes, and yellow bill and legs. Juveniles are browner overall, with a paler brown head.
Flocks use open lowlands and foothills, including farms, plantations, and grassland, and often forage on the ground. They sometimes feed near livestock.
