This account concerns the Alligator Rivers subspecies, restricted to floodplains between the Mary and East Alligator rivers in the Northern Territory, Australia. It uses grassy wetlands and samphire shrubland, foraging on the ground or low in the vegetation.
In this subspecies, adult males are bright golden yellow with a black chest band. Females are pale lemon yellow and lack the band.
It forages on the ground in dense grass or low shrubs. On the floodplains, it uses tall grassland and samphire shrubland, and its diet consists mostly of invertebrates.
