A small bird that uses exposed perches in grassland.
Males in breeding plumage have a black head, back, wings and tail with a white belly. In autumn non-breeding plumage, both sexes are brown.
It visits lowland grasslands in Hokkaido and mountain grasslands in Honshu. During autumn migration it also appears on river flats and farmland.
