A southern African species account says male and female African Stonechats differ in plumage. The adult male has a black head and throat with white neck patches.
The adult male has a black head and throat, white patches at the sides of the neck, and a white wing band. The breast is deep reddish-brown, fading to a white belly.
The account says it mainly eats small arthropods. It often spots prey from a perch such as a bush or fence and drops to the ground to catch it.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
