This rodent is known from Angola and western Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its 1888 description reported stiff bristles; a dental-wear study grouped examined specimens with grassland-swamp habitat and a grass-eating category.
Huet’s 1888 account describes yellow-brown fur, rusty tones at the rump and sides of the tail, softer hair underneath, and very stiff outer bristles.
A dental-wear comparison grouped examined P. campanae with grass eaters and a grassland-swamp habitat category. This was a classification of specimens, not field observation of feeding.
