A rounded bird with soft, whistle-like calls.
Males have a black head and red cheeks and throat. Females also have a black head, but their cheeks and throat are grey-brown.
Outside the breeding season it lives in small flocks and eats conifer buds and seeds. In Niigata it breeds in high mountains and spends winter in lowlands.
