A widespread Australian cockatoo, with a pink face and breast contrasting with grey wings and back.
The crown is pale pink. Birds from western Australia have comparatively paler plumage.
Galahs usually nest in existing tree hollows, but a pair observed in a Canberra suburb excavated one in a eucalypt. Saunders and colleagues reported that the work began in May 2024 and continued for about 15 months, producing a hollow 64 cm deep. Its floor measured 27.2 cm long and 13.8 cm at its narrowest. Common Brushtail Possums entered during construction; after residents removed them, the birds resumed work.
The pair laid four eggs, three hatched, and one young fledged in November 2025. The authors called this the first documented instance of a parrot or cockatoo excavating a hardwood nest hollow from scratch. It is one pair’s observation, in which hollow excavation and human removal of competing animals occurred during the same breeding attempt.
