The Eastern Koel has glossy black males with a blue-green sheen and brown females with many white spots. Its loud calls are familiar around dawn, and it migrates to Australia to breed in spring.
Males are glossy black with blue-green tinges and red eyes. Females have brown upperparts heavily spotted with white and pale buff underparts marked with fine black bars.
It feeds in the canopy on fruits, especially figs. It is a brood parasite: a female lays one egg in another bird's nest, and the hatchling pushes the host's eggs or young out. Males give a loud repeated rising whistle; females give repeated 'keek' calls.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
