This hummingbird is recorded in dry areas of Colombia and Ecuador. A 2015 paper uses the older genus name Amazilia grayi and compares the male's tail and the female's underside with a related species.
In the 2015 paper's comparison, the male's tail is green rather than the comparison bird's blue. The female's underside is described as whiter and less spotted than the comparison female's.
The paper places it at higher elevations in Colombia's arid upper Cauca Valley and records it in dry scrub and gardens in Ecuador.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
