A large hummingbird of mountain forests, it feeds at flowers and the male shows glossy colors on its crown and throat.
The male has a violet crown and iridescent throat; the female has a green back and grayish underparts.
It drinks nectar and also eats small insects, visiting flowers in mountain forests and along their edges.
