A small flycatcher with white patches on both sides of the tail base. Breeding males have orange-red on the throat and breast, but females and young birds look different.
All plumages have large white patches on both sides of the tail base. In breeding males, the face and sides of the breast are grey, and the throat and breast are orange-red. Females and first-winter birds have a different appearance.
Usually solitary and active, it often flicks its wings and cocks its tail. It makes short flights from low perches to catch insects in the air, and also forages on the ground and in grass.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
