The East Amazonian Fire-eye lives in evergreen forests of north-central and northeastern Brazil. Males are glossy black and females are reddish brown; both have a white patch on the back.
It is about 16–18 cm long. The male is glossy black with a white central mantle patch and red eyes. The female has a reddish-brown head and back, buff underparts, and greyish sides of the head.
It lives in evergreen forest with dense understory, from lowlands to below about 1,000 m. It takes prey by jumping from a perch and feeds mainly on invertebrates, as well as small lizards. It may hunt more actively near army-ant swarms.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
