This antbird lives in dense forest understory from northern to central South America. It searches near the ground for insects and small lizards.
Males are glossy black with a white central mantle patch and red eyes. Females of the nominate subspecies maura are brownish with a white mantle patch and pale eye-stripes.
It takes invertebrates and small lizards near the ground and may forage close to army-ant swarms.
