The Pale-billed Woodpecker is a large woodpecker with a red head and pale bill. It drums on trees while searching for insects and lives from Mexico to western Panama.
The male has a red head and crest, red throat, and yellowish-white bill. Its back is black with white neck stripes, while the underside is buff with black bars. The female has a black throat and crown.
It is usually found alone or in pairs, perching at different heights in trees. It may make a louder first stroke followed by a second tap and chips holes in wood to find insects, mainly beetle larvae.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
