This babbler is endemic to Sri Lanka. It inhabits forest, well-wooded areas, and thick undergrowth, and is absent from the extremely dry north and southeast according to the local species account.
Larger than a House Sparrow, it has deep gray-brown upperparts, rusty-orange underparts, and a distinctive dark brown cap.
Usually in pairs, it searches through undergrowth and low canopy, rustling dry leaf litter for insects and worms. It walks as well as hops and is secretive.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
