Two subspecies with different plumage are described: dark-form D. p. platyrostris and pale-form D. p. intermedius. The first has a blackish crown and buff streaks; the second has a browner crown and brighter rufous wings and tail. A nesting study in northeastern Argentina found nests in natural tree cavities and nest boxes.
The Atlantic Forest subspecies D. p. platyrostris is the dark form, with a blackish crown, buff streaks, and dull chestnut wings and tail. The gallery-forest subspecies D. p. intermedius is the pale form, with a browner crown and brighter rufous wings and tail.
A nesting study in the humid Chaco and Atlantic Forest of northeastern Argentina found nests in natural cavities and nest boxes. Both adults took part in nest building, incubation, and care of the young.
