This flycatcher is widespread in Peruvian Amazonia. Peru Aves describes southern birds as migratory and birds north of the Amazon River as resident.
About 13 cm long, it has olive-brown head, breast, and upperparts, a greyish or grey-yellowish belly, and two broad pale rufous wing bars.
It forages in dense understory near forest edges and large openings. Peru Aves describes birds south of the Amazon River as austral migrants expected in Peru from May to October, while birds to the north are resident.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
