This parrot occurs in Brazil. Its 2002 original description used the genus name Pionopsitta aurantiocephala; the current candidate name in this dataset is Pyrilia aurantiocephala.
Adult specimens used in the original description had bare skin on the head and nape, colored bright orange. The paper distinguished this from the black-headed P. vulturina.
Store norske leksikon reports the species from humid tropical and swamp forest and says it nests in tree hollows.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
