The southwestern Indian form has dark-brown upperparts with pale shaft streaks, a blackish face and throat, and pinkish-brown underparts. The sexes are similar. The Eastern Ghats form has paler underparts, and young birds lack the darker face.
It eats grass and weed seeds and rice. The regional Indian account gives an April-to-August nesting season.
