The Fiji Petrel is a dark brown seabird with a long neck and narrow wings. It has land records on Gau Island, Fiji, and observations of flight and surface activity in waters south of Gau in 2009 and 2022.
Three measurable specimens were 28.0–28.8 cm in total length. The plumage is dark brown overall, with a slender body, long neck, and long, narrow pointed wings. The head and breast may appear slightly darker, and some birds show a faint rusty tone below the breast. The bill is black; the legs are pinkish flesh with a pale blue tint.
In the 2009 survey south of Gau, birds were observed gliding into the wind with their long, narrow wings outstretched. Four birds visited the research bait slicks, and one took a piece of fish offal. On 30 May 2022, one bird explored an oily slick off the island for several minutes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
