This large flying squirrel occurs in the high mountains of Yunnan, China. The study documents two mountain areas through specimens, camera images, and sightings.
The back is grizzled gray-brown and more saturated brown than in E. cinereus. The tail is similar to the back at its base and black toward the tip.
It is recorded in alpine zones at 3,400–4,450 m on two Yunnan mountains, with camera images from high cliffs. Thirty-one observations showed year-round, mostly nocturnal activity.
Faeces and partly eaten plant material were found beneath juniper near a high cliff. The authors infer that juniper may be important food in this area.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
