This cavy occurs in southern South America. Argentina's National Parks biodiversity profile describes its dark, black-speckled back and pale eye rings, as well as a diurnal, ground-dwelling, group-living life in shallow burrows.
The back is dark grayish brown, speckled with black, while the underside is grayish white or yellowish. A pale ring surrounds the eye, and a matching patch often occurs behind the ears.
The profile describes it as diurnal and terrestrial, living in groups and making shallow burrows. It is herbivorous and feeds mainly on grasses.
