This finch is recorded in Argentina’s low woods and grasslands. Adult males have a striking gray, orange, and white pattern, and the birds may hide among dense plants.
Adult males are patterned gray, orange, and white, with a black beard-like cheek patch edged by a white eyebrow. Females and immature birds are browner than adult males.
Argentine records include low woods and grasslands; the species account also describes low scrubby forest and overgrown clearings. It tends to stay hidden in dense vegetation but sometimes sings from an exposed perch.
