The Subantarctic Shearwater is a small seabird that breeds on remote islands in the Southern Ocean. It nests in soil burrows, but New Zealand Birds Online says much of its biology remains poorly known.
It is black above and white below. The back and upperwings can look greyish in fresh plumage, with fine white wing-tip lines that fade as the feathers wear.
On breeding islands, it burrows into soil beneath scrub or tussock.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
