Grey-chested Doves have muted gray-brown upperparts with a slight purplish cast and pale underparts. They usually forage on foot, alone or in pairs, in forests from southern Mexico through Central America to northern Colombia.
The adult male has gray-brown upperparts, with green or purple gloss on the inner wing feathers that changes with the light. The underparts are pale gray, and the female is duller and darker.
It is usually seen alone or in pairs, not flocks. It tends to walk rather than fly while looking for food and uses forests, including mature secondary growth.
