This grassland bird is endemic to India's Western Ghats. It breeds on grassy or bracken-covered slopes and in wet patches, nesting within grass.
The 2017 study records a difference in color at the base of the bill between adult males and females.
It uses grassy or bracken-covered slopes and wet patches. At Belgaum, observers recorded a small grass nest about 40 cm above ground. The female incubated, and both adults brought insect larvae, grubs, and earthworms to the young.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
