The crown and forehead are rusty red to a line between the eyes; the face is black, with a white moustache. The 2022 guidelines describe the pileatus population in Brazilian Amazon forest under the older name Saguinus mystax pileatus. A 2023 taxonomic study retains this population as a subspecies of Saguinus pileatus, so this entry stays with that population's description.
The crown and forehead are rusty red to a thin line between the eyes. The mantle is blackish brown with fine buff or orange ticking; the face is black with a white moustache.
The account places this population in forests of the Brazilian Amazon. It describes the former pileatus form; the habitat is not generalized to the separate pluto subspecies.
