[2]Hounds brought from Germany to North Carolina
The UKC standard says Jonathon Plott came from Germany to the United States in 1750 with boar-hunting hounds. After his family settled in the mountains of western North Carolina, the dogs were used to hunt bears because wild boar were not then present in the country.
[1]A hound built for speed and endurance
The UKC standard calls for strength without excessive heaviness and emphasizes speed, stamina and endurance. It describes a tendency to tree game and a dog that gives voice while trailing.
[1]A glossy coat with brindle preferred
The short- or medium-length coat is smooth and glossy. UKC accepts brindle, brindle with a black saddle, black with brindle trim, and solid buckskin or black. Some white on the chest and feet and graying around the jaws and muzzle are permissible. Brindle is preferred when other factors are equal; albinism is disqualifying.
