This small green parakeet has blue on the wings, a yellow crown, and an orange band above the eyes. Its native range is restricted to beech-forest valleys on New Zealand’s South Island.
It has a long green tail, blue on the outer wing feathers, a lemon-yellow crown, an orange frontal band, and orange patches on the rump. Males are usually brighter; juveniles are duller and may lack some head color.
It occurs almost entirely in beech forest and eats seeds, flowers, buds, and invertebrates. In years when beech seeds are abundant, it often feeds high in the canopy; it nests in tree hollows.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
