A large, round-faced owl of northern forests that hunts small mammals in nearby meadows and openings.
It has a large round facial disk, broad wings, concentric facial markings, and a black-and-white bow-tie pattern at the throat.
Small mammals such as voles make up most of its diet. At dusk, dawn, and night it listens for prey under snow and may plunge through the snow to catch it.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
