This meadowlark inhabits open country in southern South America. The male's red breast is conspicuous, and the species nests on the ground.
The male has vivid red on the breast and throat, with red above the eye. The female's red coloration is less conspicuous.
It forages close to the ground. The female builds a domed nest among grass, reached by a long tunnel that conceals the nest chamber.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
