A bird that runs through dry grassland and open woodland and feeds on insects on the ground. It occurs across much of sub-Saharan Africa.
It is about 20 cm long. The rear crown is brown; in flight, the black secondaries and a long black mark on the belly are visible.
It mainly eats insects, making short runs and pauses as it picks prey from the ground.
