This tanager occurs widely in Amazonia and elsewhere in South America. In Tumbes, northwestern Peru, the regional account says it seems limited to mangroves near sea level.
The male is yellow-olive above, with a mostly yellow bill and a black mask and throat bordered by yellow. Its breast is rufous, grading to yellow on the rest of the underparts. The female is similar but lacks the black mask and rufous breast.
It forages at forest edges and in second growth. In Tumbes, northwestern Peru, it has been recorded in mangroves near sea level, where the account says it seems restricted to that habitat.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
