A large woodpecker of North America that searches for ants and beetles on the ground as well as on tree trunks. In flight, its white rump and the color of its wing and tail shafts are visible.
Its brown body has black scalloped markings and dark spots on the belly. The white rump is conspicuous in flight; the wing and tail shafts are yellow in the East and red in the West.
It finds ants and beetles on the ground and digs into soil with its slightly curved bill. It excavates nest cavities in dead or diseased tree trunks and branches.
