This large parrot inhabits mountains of northeastern Mexico. It has a green body with a dark maroon forehead and wing edges, feeds mainly on pine seeds, and roosts in groups outside the breeding season. It may fly long distances to feeding areas.
Adults are dark green with a dark maroon stripe on the forehead and forecrown; the wing edge and thighs are also dark red. The cheeks and ear coverts are paler green. Juveniles lack the maroon stripe and have green wing edges.
It feeds mainly on pine seeds, along with seeds of fir and oak. Outside the breeding season it roosts communally in trees or on cliffs and makes conspicuous long flights between roosts and feeding areas.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
