This parakeet has a dark green body and an orange-red belly. In the wild it flies between forest patches in small flocks and eats fruit and seeds.
Adults are mostly dark green, with purple-brown ear coverts and an orange-red abdomen. Yellow marks the bend of the wing, the bare eye ring is white, and the eye is brown.
Wild birds are usually seen in flocks of up to about 20, flying quickly between forest patches. At night they roost together in a tree hollow or concealed foliage.
