The giant bandicoot is recorded from lowlands of southeastern Papua New Guinea. Museum records are limited, and little is known about its ecology.
Its back is reddish brown with dark flecks, the flanks are a richer reddish brown, and the underside is pale orange or fawn.
The few available observations suggest dense tropical rainforest, often near creeks or rivers.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
