This thrush inhabits humid montane forest. The black-headed male of the nominate form searches for food among leaf litter.
The nominate male has a black hood, olive-brown upperparts, yellow-orange underparts, a yellow bill, and a narrow eye-ring.
It uses humid montane and secondary forest, from canopy to lower layers. It forages in leaf litter, and records describe it joining army-ant swarms.
