This dove ranges from the eastern Lesser Sundas through Australia and New Guinea to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. It uses forest and mangroves and feeds mainly on fallen fruit and seeds on the ground.
The wings and mantle are emerald green, the neck and breast dark brownish purple, and the tail black. Males have a brownish head and white shoulder; females lack the white shoulder bar.
It usually feeds singly or in pairs on fallen fruit and seeds on the ground, and also takes invertebrates. At an artificial feeder in North Queensland, a paper reported more exposed white shoulder patches near conspecifics, but said further study was needed.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
