This small petrel has an extensive white forehead contrasting with its dark crown. It breeds on the Juan Fernández Islands off Chile and migrates after breeding to the north-west Pacific off Japan.
It is grey above and white below, with a black-tipped tail. A broad white forehead stands out against the dark crown and nape; a white patch toward the ear separates the cap from a partial dusky breast band.
It breeds from October to April in fern forest on Isla Alejandro Selkirk, then migrates north-west across the Pacific to wintering waters off Japan.
