This seabird has a grey back and white underparts. It breeds in Madeira’s central mountains and feeds at sea on squid, small fish and other prey.
Dark grey wings and back contrast with white underparts and a grey tail. The bill is small and slender, and a broken grey band crosses the breast.
Zino's petrel is an endemic seabird that breeds on Madeira, Portugal. A 2024 study examined ferrets living wild on the island using 37 records gathered between 2001 and 2023. The evidence included photographs from a camera-trap survey that covered 582 trap-nights. Ferrets were recorded in both natural areas and places used by people.
The study documented a photograph of a ferret consuming a Zino's petrel and listed the seabird among native prey of the introduced mammal. The authors use the record to describe a direct link between Madeira's endemic wildlife and an introduced predator, and highlight evidence-based management of invasive mammals as relevant to protecting native fauna.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
