The Magenta Petrel breeds in forest in the south-west of Chatham Island. Its at-sea range outside the breeding season is unknown.
Adults have a grey head and neck, white underparts, pink feet, and long, narrow wings.
It nests in long burrows in forest soil. Both sexes share incubation and care of the chick, and the birds feed on squid at sea.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
