This small piculet occurs in western Amazonia. A 2013 field account recorded foraging among bamboo and vines and an apparent recently fledged juvenile.
An apparent recently fledged juvenile observed in June 2013 was paler overall, with rufous underparts. It lacked the white spots on the adult's black crown.
Across 23 foraging observations, birds used bamboo and vines while searching for food. Adult ants or ant larvae were recorded as food, but the study does not establish their share of the diet.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
