A cockatoo of Indonesia’s Moluccan islands, with a salmon-coloured crest raised when excited or threatened.
Its toes point both forward and backward. When climbing branches, it uses its bill as well as its feet.
Field observations in the forest of Negeri Manusela on Seram Island, Indonesia, recorded Salmon-crested cockatoo nests in Pulaka (*Octomeles sumatrana*) and Damar (*Agathis alba*) trees. The mean nest-tree diameter was about 39.3 cm. Nests were 22 m above the ground in Damar and 10–19 m high in Pulaka.
In both tree types, holes were on the main trunk near the base of a branch. The cavities were round or oval, and vegetation around nesting trees was dominated by Damar and rattan. The two tree species held nests at different reported heights in the same forest, with every recorded nest close to a branch base.
