Male Red-throated Sunbirds show glossy green and violet plumage, while females are subdued olive. They forage for flowers and small prey in forest canopies.
The male has a metallic green crown and upper back, a maroon band across the upper back, and violet back and rump. The female is dull olive above and yellow-olive below. Juveniles resemble females but are grayer underneath.
In the canopy of moist lowland forest and its edges, it searches for nectar, pollen, small fruits, insects, and spiders.
